“I think true anger is an emotion I have a hard time authentically portraying, especially when it’s on my own behalf,” she reflects. “It’s somehow more vulnerable and private to me than crying – and I think that’s by design, how young girls get socialized.” That realization became less about revisiting the past than discovering a part of herself that had never before existed in her music.
